PMHNP Peer Consult Support Program

Need guidance on managing a patient with mental health concerns?

You don’t have to navigate it alone.

PMHNP Peer Consult Support Program is a member benefit designed to connect Nurse Practitioners with experienced Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) for peer-to-peer guidance and support.

This program was created in response to feedback from primary care NPs who shared concerns about managing patients with psychiatric conditions—especially during critical transitions such as post-hospital discharge, medication adjustments, and the wait time before a patient can establish care with a mental health provider.

How It Helps

Through this program, eligible members can consult with a PMHNP colleague to discuss:

  • Psychiatric medication considerations
  • Transition-of-care concerns after hospitalization
  • Clinical questions related to behavioral health management
  • Support for complex mental health presentations in primary care
  • Guidance while patients await specialty mental health care

Why This Matters

Mental health needs continue to rise, while access to psychiatric care remains limited in many communities. This benefit helps bridge that gap by giving NPs access to knowledgeable peers who understand both the clinical and operational realities of practice.

NNPEN believes collaboration strengthens patient care—and no NP should feel isolated when managing challenging cases.

This peer consult service is available exclusively to NNPEN members as part of our commitment to supporting NP practice owners and clinicians with meaningful, practice-enhancing resources.

 

PMHNP Peer Consult Support is a members-only educational resource and does not constitute medical, psychiatric, legal, or emergency care. No provider-patient relationship is established.

Do not share protected health information (PHI) or any patient-identifying information. All case discussions must be fully de-identified in compliance with HIPAA

Responses are based on PMHNP availability. Please allow 3–5 business days for a response; weekends and holidays are excluded. This service is not intended for urgent or emergency situations. NNPEN reserves the right to modify or discontinue this benefit at any time.
